Dana's Homeworthy Feature
I love so many things — helping people, styling spaces, solving problems. But promoting myself — especially when it involves shooting photos and videos — I just cringe at the thought. So this past summer when I was approached by a producer from Homeworthy to film an episode in my house in Maine, my immediate reaction was fear and panic rather than excitement. But friends who knew the site told me that I was crazy not to do it. And having worked in PR, I know well that you get your name out into the universe by selling and marketing yourself — things don’t sell themselves. So, with my new can-do mentality, I said yes!
The day arrives — I didn’t sleep the night before. I spent the prior day cutting and arranging flowers, fluffing pillows and trying to make the house look perfect. What do I wear? Sounds silly, but I definitely had to put some thought into it. I go with white jeans, a cream linen button-down and bare feet. I dress myself up with a little jewelry and wear the beautiful vintage Tiffany cuff my husband just got me for my birthday.
John, the videographer, pulls in and unloads his equipment. He takes about 30 minutes to get set up and figures out the right room with the best light to conduct the interview, which kicks off the day of filming. The producer calls in and prompts me with questions and pointers, which was super helpful. Then the camera starts rolling, the interview begins and away we go! And while I still feel awkward talking about myself, once I begin talking about what I do and the things in my home, I feel my footing and start to enjoy myself.
After the interview, John and I go from room to room for the house tour, and as the day passes, I warm up to the camera. I feel more at ease and thankfully am able to do retakes when I mess up. It wasn’t so bad! Like most things, it’s the fear of the unknown that causes anxiety. And even though I was way out of my comfort zone, I was really glad I did it.
Since the episode aired (you can watch it here, Homeworthy - Dana Creel), I have been asked about a few things from the episode. I thought I would share….
What is the paint color in the sunroom and dining room?
It is Benjamin Moore – Catalina Blue #703. It’s the perfect mix of blue and green.
Where did I get the sheep seat in my living room?
I found it through the Thyme Hotel in the Cotswolds.
Can I share the link for the bud vases in the dining room?
Yes, they are from Summerill & Bishop….one of my favorite sites for tabletop. Summerill & Bishop, bud vases are here and here and come in more colors.
Where did I get the labradorite mineral seen in the living room?
They are from Creel & Gow and this is the labradorite. I’ve been told it brings good energy into your home.
Where did you find the placemats, napkin rings and plates in the breakfast room? I found the placemats and napkin rings from Creel & Gow. Similar placemats are here and here (from Crate & Barrel), the napkin rings are here and here. And the plates can be found here and are from Cabana.
Where do I get that glassware for my bar?
I like to have traditional glasses always but also like to add color and different shapes and sizes. I always stock my kitchen and bar with these from Crate and Barrel because they can easily be white wine and/or red wine glasses. And these also are from Crate and Barrel are a staple for mocktails, cocktails and water. And for a little splurge, these La DoubleJ are fun and add some color. And I love the different colors of this glass from Il Buca Vita which comes in a few different sizes.
